Fox News recently reported (via The Sun) that Noah’s Ark may have been found. Fox News also reported that the find has generated a lot of skepticism (some of it fair, some not) and has stated that the verdict is far from out. I would agree the verdict is far from out (I’m relying, of course, on my long history of archeological expertise) but all this reminded me of 2 things that are worth mentioning whenever things like this make international news.
1. The Sinful Man is hostile to God.
2. The Gospel is the only thing that can reconcile sinful man to God.
What I mean by that is this: There is no single piece of archeological evidence that you could parade in front of a sinful skeptic that would change his heart and save his life. They could prove, beyond a shadow of a scientific doubt, that this recent find is indeed Noah’s legendary ark and the sinful man would still doubt, dismiss and persist in their hostility toward God.
Consider Matthew 28:16-17
“16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.”
Did you see it? They’re standing before the same Jesus Christ that they saw beaten, crucified, stabbed, and buried now risen, breathing, talking and ascending into Heaven…but “some doubted.” Is this not hilarious, sad, insane, and amazing?
Consider also John 12:37-40
37 Though [Jesus] had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
and I would heal them.”
So, there’s no single sign nor shred of historical evidence that would win the definitive battle for salvation in the soul of a sinner…not ultimately. Belief in God is a gift from God. Period. And it comes from the Spirit applying the word of God, in the gospel, to the heart of the sinful, skeptic, rebel.
Ephesians 2:8-9 is abundantly clear and humbling,
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
So, ark or no ark our mission and the power behind the mission stays the same. Praise Him!
